Merle Noir (Merel Zwart) is a Dutch lingerie designer who fuses elegance with craftsmanship. She is known for her emphasis of the soft female silhouette and fitting through her unique handmade pieces composed of the finest laces and precious silks. Her collection features a range of delicate lingerie and lingerie inspired wear that stands out for its comfort-to-skin luxury.
Merel holds a BA of the Artemis Fashion Academy, Master Tailor Institute and a degree from Fachschule für Mode und Schnittechnik M. Müller & Sohn. After graduating, and spending several years working for couture houses and ateliers such as Viktor&Rolf and the Dutch National Ballet. She established her Amsterdam-based label. Her fascination with lace stems from a determination to find couture techniques to incorporate divine lace in fabrics. Her avant-garde lingerie is available in limited edition through merlenoir.nl. All lingerie is designed and created in the Amsterdam atelier. Every piece is meticulously crafted and is unique within the style.
Driven by innovative designs, every piece of her collections is crafted from pristine materials including delicate laces from France, three-dimensional flowers, and the softest silks from Italy. Merle created this collection with a fascination for antique laces and the heritage they represent. Some of the garments acquired for her research are a decade old; all from private collectors and many have been in the families for generations. Enchanted by their fragility and the memories they hold, she wanted to bring these back in newly developed design techniques working from the lace and body.
